So who is a lawyer? A Lawyer is a person who is educated in law and has been licensed to practice law. Lawyer is an interesting profession since one needs to apply abstract legal theories and knowledge for solving specific individual problems. The duties of a lawyer depend upon the legal jurisdiction of a place. In US lawyers are also referred to as attorneys. In most of the countries the requirements for becoming a lawyer vary from country to country and in most of the countries besides getting a bachelors degree you need to clear advance examinations, complete additional courseware and get apprenticeship to be qualified as a lawyer.

The career structure of the lawyer can be divided into the following:

Common Law
Civil Law
Specialization

Besides acting as a lawyer they also have other career options in law such as administrative law judge, government counsel, law professor, corporate in-house counsel, prosecutor, arbitrator or judge. In most of the civil law countries careers of lawyers are generally based around their legal education structure and therefore offers less flexibility in their career.

Over the years lawyers have received backlash since they have been involved in unfair practices such as deceiving clients, getting involved in dilatory tactics, charging high fees and deceiving clients.

Still a society cannot function without a lawyer through them law can be interpreted and justice can be achieved through them. Lawyers are pertinent for a society but they definitely need to change the manner in which they carry out their profession in order to earn the respect needed.
